Apply: Certificate

To take all 15 credits of the Forensic Toxicology, Forensic Drug Chemistry, Forensic Serology and DNA, Environmental Forensics, or Forensic Death Investigation program, participants must be registered as post baccalaureate students with the UF College administering the program. The application must be submitted complete by the term deadline (cf. Important Dates)

The Certificate in Forensic Toxicology is administered through the UF College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Certificate of Forensic Drug Chemistry, Certificate of Forensic DNA and Serology, Certificate of Environmental Forensics, and Certificate of Death Investigation are administered through the UF College of Pharmacy.

On successful completion of their program, students will receive a University of Florida Certificate from the College in their chosen specialty.

Students wishing to subsequently pursue a masters degree at the University of Florida will then have to apply for admission to the graduate school and take the GRE.  Please see the MS program requirements and application for further information.

Transfer of credits

Six credits of non-degree certificate courses can be applied toward a certificate program. Coursework from other universities cannot be accepted towards a certificate. Not more than fifteen credits will be accepted towards the transfer of credits to the Master's program.  In order for the credits to be transferred to the MS degree, the following criteria have to be met:

Minimum requirements for acceptance:

  1. A baccalaureate degree in a science subject from an accredited institution. If your Bachelors degree is not in a science subject, please email Program Assistant Nancy Toffolo at ntoffolo@ufl.edu.
  2. An upper-division GPA of 2.0 (C grade) or better. To calculate what your upper-division GPA is, please use the following form:PDF Document Icon Upper Division GPA Worksheet.
  3. A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based, 213 on the computer-based, or 80 on the internet TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) for a person whose native language is not English or for an applicant who graduated with a Bachelor's degree from a non-English speaking country.(Non-English speaking countries are those which are not included in the Graduate School's list of English speaking countries.)

Include a non-refundable check for $30 to cover the UF application fee. This must be separate from the payment for your tuition fees. Your application cannot be processed without this check. Please make out the check to the University of Florida.
Request original and official transcripts in individually sealed envelopes from every school you've attended since high school be sent to the Office of Admissions:

  • Students whose degrees are from outside the United States of America, please see the following link for additional transcript verification requirements: International Students / International Transcripts
  • Former UF students who haven’t attended any school after UF do not need to request transcripts.
  • If you are not finished with your Bachelors degree yet, please send a transcript with the finalized degree showing it was earned. Receipt of this transcript must be received and processed before a decision can be made on the application.
Once you have mailed your application, please email Jennifer Larson (jlarson@cop.ufl.edu) with the following information:
  1. What level (Certificate), which program concentration (Toxicology, DNA and Serology, Drug Chemistry, Environmental Forensics or Death Investigation), and which term you are applying for.
  2. The list of schools attended since High School along with the degree(s) earned, when the degree was completed, and what the degree is in. Also, note if your name will be different on the transcript (married or divorced) since you attended the school
Once you have been admitted, complete the Online Course Registration form.
If you are not in the Gainesville area, you can disregard the email you will receive about immunization requirements. You will be exempt from having to provide proof of immunization.

Financial Aid

The certificate programs do not qualify for any federal, institutional or school certified private loans.

For the Masters Program you can apply for federal loans or private loans. However in order to be eligible for either type of loan except for the two private loans listed above you must be enrolled at least half time. In the fall or spring semester that is five or more credit hours and in the summer it is four or more credit hours. Unfortunately there are no scholarships or grants for the program.
