Apply: Non-degree
Up to 6 credit hours of coursework may be taken for non-degree credit, without formal admission to graduate study. These courses may be counted toward the certificate or Master's program should the student subsequently be enrolled as a graduate student at UF.
This option is available for students who would like to experience graduate level classes while making a decision to pursue either option 1 or 2, or who would like to broaden their knowledge base of forensic sciences to enhance their professional development. If a student registers for three credits during a particular term as a non-degree student and wishes to attend another term for three credits, a new non-degree application is required. The non-degree application only pertains to the term in which it is submitted.
For the non-degree student, grades will be given and held on a transcript, but will not be counted toward a degree, including the certificate, at the University of Florida until full admission is granted. At that time, any credits accumulated in this program will be petitioned to count toward graduation. Only those courses which have been completed with a grade of “B” or better are eligible for transfer. Enrollment in a course as a non-degree student does not guarantee acceptance into the program. Students not accepted into the program within two semesters will not be allowed to continue with course work.
Minimum requirements for acceptance:
- A baccalaureate degree in a science subject from an accredited institution. If your Bachelors degree is not in a science subject, please email Program Assistant Nancy Toffolo at ntoffolo@ufl.edu.
- An upper-division GPA of 2.0 (C grade) or better. To calculate what your upper-division GPA is, please use the following form:
Upper Division GPA Worksheet - A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based, 213 on the computer-based, or 80 on the internet TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) for a person whose native language is not English or for an applicant who graduated with a Bachelor's degree from a non-English speaking country.(Non-English speaking countries are those which are not included in the Graduate School's list of English speaking countries.)
Restrictions:
- A student who is not in good standing or who is under suspension from any institution may not register for non-degree course work.
- Anyone who has been denied admission to the University of Florida may not register for non-degree course work.
- A student who is already admitted to the University of Florida needs to contact us before an application is submitted.
Application Procedure:
NOTE: While the nondegree application states that nondegree applications are not being accepted for Fall and Spring terms (for in-person campus courses), this is not the case for the special programs, such as the distance forensics programs. Please disregard this statement on the nondegree application. E-mail jlarson@cop.ufl.edu with any questions.

The certificate programs do not qualify for any federal, institutional or school certified private loans.
For the Masters Program you can apply for federal loans or private loans. However in order to be eligible for either type of loan except for the two private loans listed above you must be enrolled at least half time. In the fall or spring semester that is five or more credit hours and in the summer it is four or more credit hours. For further information about aid for the Masters Program please contact Mike Menefee via email at mmenefee@ufl.edu or via phone (352) 273-6202. Unfortunately there are no scholarships or grants for the program.
