Minimum Requirements for Acceptance
- A baccalaureate degree (a 4-year degree) in a natural science subject from an accredited institution. If you have a DVM and no undergraduate degree, the DVM will serve as the basis for admission. If the student does not have a degree in a natural science subject, they may still be eligible for admission
- Meet the minimum GPA requirements for the program. Master’s degree applicants must have an upper-division GPA of a 3.0 (B grade) or better, while graduate certificate and non-degree applicants must have a 2.0 GPA or better. To calculate an upper-division GPA, please use the Upper-Division GPA Worksheet.
- A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based, 213 on the computer-based, or 80 on the internet TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) for students whose native language is not English or for an applicant who graduated with a bachelor’s degree from a non-English speaking country. (Non-English speaking countries are those which are not included in the Graduate School’s list of English speaking countries.) Other Graduate Council–approved English language skills tests may be substituted for the TOEFL.
To apply for the master’s degree program, students must meet minimum requirements and submit their GRE scores. The minimum acceptable GRE scores are a 153 Verbal and 144 Quantitative (500 each prior to August 2011).
Master’s degree applicants need to complete an MS application and all the application steps.
To apply for the graduate certificate program, students must meet minimum requirements.
Graduate certificate applicants need to complete a Graduate Certificate application and all the application steps.
Non-degree Seeking Students
Non-degree seeking students must apply for each semester they take courses. To apply as a non-degree seeking student, applicants must meet minimum requirements.
- Students must comply with the standard UF Computer and Software Requirements.
- AOL Users: The AOL browser does not properly display the web pages for the online courses, nor does it function properly when using the proxy server to connect to the library. If you use AOL to connect to the internet, you must use either Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer as your browser.
- Proxy Server: For information and instructions about accessing the library’s resources through the proxy server, please consult the library’s help page on the topic.
- Please fill out applications to our programs, registration requests, and all other forms on a computer or laptop. Some students cannot see all necessary information on their iPhone, iPad, or tablet.
Accessing the 1098-tax form
- An IRS Tax Form 1098-T is produced each January for the immediate prior year showing qualified tuition paid and scholarships/fellowships received. The form is mailed to the student’s permanent address unless they have opted to receive it electronically.
- 1098-T is available for viewing beginning in mid-February.
- To access the 1098-T, please go to MyUFL > My Campus Finances > View 1098-T.
- There is a $35 application fee for MS and certificate applications. There is no application fee associated with the non-degree application.
- Some courses do require textbooks.
Financial Aid Eligibility
Master’s degree students are eligible for private and federal loans. Graduate certificate students are not eligible for federal financial aid but may be eligible for private loans. Nondegree seeking students are not eligible for federal or private loans. Please contact our Financial Aid Coordinator about possible private student loan eligibility.
Students seeking Federal Student Loans should complete must complete their:
- Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible.
- Financial aid applicants are responsible for ensuring the timely completion of several steps through FAFSA and UF’s Student Self Service in order for funds to be disbursed by the tuition due date.
Minimum credits for eligibility for financial aid:
- Fall & Spring = 5 credits
- Summer = 4 credits

Make check payable to the University of Florida include your UFID number for proper credit. We are not responsible for checks that do not arrive. Mailed payments are considered on time based on the date received by the cashier, and not based on the date of postmark. Please mail check to:

Veterans Affairs and Military Students

Our program runs by semester: Spring (January – April), Summer (May – August) and Fall (August – December).
Truly an Online Program
All courses are conducted online.
Time to Complete a Degree
- Students average 2 ½ – 3 years to complete the master’s degree, but have up to seven years to complete coursework. Coursework taken as a nondegree or certificate student is also part of the seven year time-frame. If the degree is not completed within seven years the coursework taken prior will expire.
- Students average 1 ½ – 2 years to complete the certificate program but have up to seven years to complete.
Graduate Certificate Students
Graduate certificate students must maintain an overall grade point average of a 3.0.
- Passing grade is “C” or higher.
- All master’s degree students must maintain an overall grade point average of a 3.0 to avoid academic probation and in order to graduate.
- Students should contact their academic advisor if they have specific questions about their grades or GPA.
Transferring Credit from Another Institution
If you have graduate credit from another institution you may transfer up to, but no more than, nine credits to fulfill credit at the University of Florida within your master’s program.
To request a transfer of credit from another institution, email firstname.lastname@example.org with the following information:
- The name of previous institution
- The course name/number from previous institution
- The term/year the course was completed
- The course in our program which the credits will satisfy
- A copy of transcripts (unofficial is fine); or a notification that we already have them on file
- A syllabus from the course that the student wants to transfer
Only master’s degree students are eligible to transfer credits into their MS program at the University of Florida from another institution.
Transferring Credit Toward a Higher Degree
Graduate certificate and non-degree seeking students must earn a “B” or higher in order for credits to transfer toward a higher degree. Grades earned with a B- or less will not transfer. Graduate certificate students can transfer a maximum of 15 credits toward a master’s degree. Non-degree seeking students may only transfer a maximum of 6 credits toward any veterinary forensic sciences graduate program.
Graduation and Applying to Graduate
- All graduating students will receive an email with all necessary graduation information and commencement information.
- The email will be sent out about two weeks into the term in which students are graduating.
- Students must apply through Student Self Service following our specific instructions contained in the email directions.
- Upon completion of the program, the diploma will state the college that the degree was earned in. The official transcripts will specify the student’s concentration.
In their final semester, students are required to take:
- Special Topics in their degree concentration (thesis master’s students only)
- Three credits in the fall and spring terms in order to graduate
- Two credits in the summer term in order to graduate
For all master’s students a written and oral final exam is required in the final semester.

Emergency Contact Hold
This hold is placed on all accounts each semester.
To clear the hold: Go to Student Self Service (https://student.ufl.edu) > click onto the heading “My Record” in the top left of the Student Self Service screen > click on “holds” under that heading. Follow the directions to clear the Emergency Contact hold. Log out of Student Self Service completely, close the browser, and then log back in to Student Self Service to verify that the hold was successfully removed.
Exit Interview Hold
If students have a hold for a financial aid exit interview, they will need to clear it before they can obtain a transcript or register for any further courses.

Financial Aid Coordinator
Students enrolled in the online graduate program do not need to have their immunization records sent to the University of Florida. The Distance Education Registration Team will ask the University of Florida Registrar to have this hold removed for you internally.
Registration Preparation Hold
This hold is placed on all accounts each semester.
To clear the hold: Go to Student Self Service (https://student.ufl.edu) > click onto the heading “My Record” in the top left of the Student Self Service screen > click on “holds” under that heading. Follow the directions to clear the Registration Preparation hold. Log out of Student Self Service completely, close the browser, and then log back in to Student Self Service to verify that the hold was successfully removed.
- Students will be able to access courses through our e-Learning site, also known as Canvas.
- Students will be able to access courses on the first day of classes each term.
- Students may be able to see course titles in Canvas before the first day of classes, but they will not be able to view course materials until classes officially begin.

Choosing How Many Credits to Take
Students may take any number of credits unless they meet any of the following criteria:
The student is receiving financial aid:
- If it is the fall or spring semester, students MUST register for at least FIVE credits to receive financial aid.
- If it is the summer semester, students MUST register for at least FOUR credits to receive financial aid.
If this is the student’s final semester:
- If it is the fall or spring semester, students MUST register for at least THREE credits to graduate.
- If it is the summer semester, you MUST register for at least TWO credits to graduate.
- For the fall and spring semesters, we suggest students take two to three courses.
- For the summer semester, we suggest students take one to two courses.
Maximum amount of credits
- We do not suggest taking more than five courses during one semester.
